Dead Sea Origins

The Dead Sea, located in the eastern part of Israel and west of Jordan, is the lowest lake on earth, with an elevation of minus 429 metres above sea level, and at the same time has one of the highest salt concentrations on earth. The Jordan River flows into it, but because the evaporation rate of the lake is much higher than the rate of water replenishment, the salt concentration in the lake water is extremely high, forming the Dead Sea that we see today.  The Dead Sea gets its name from the fact that its high salinity makes it impossible for most organisms to live there. It is the saltiest ocean in the world, containing about 45 billion tonnes of dissolved minerals; its salinity is about 32%, compared to the average salinity of 3% in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. This is why people can float effortlessly on the water. The mineral composition of the Dead Sea is also different from other seawater because only 12-18 per cent of Dead Sea salt contains sodium chloride, whereas the ocean contains 97 per cent of sodium chloride.

The lake's water clarity is extremely high, as is its salt content, which allows people to float on the water's surface.

Dead Sea and The Bible

The mysterious and unique nature of the Dead Sea has given rise to many legends. Perhaps the most famous is the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. According to the Bible, these two cities were destroyed by God because of the sins of their inhabitants, and the Dead Sea was located where these two cities stood. Some believe that the salt pillars of the Dead Sea are the same pillars of salt that God punished them with. These legends make the Dead Sea not only a geographical and biological wonder, but also an important part of history and culture.

Archaeologists believe that the magical qualities of the Dead Sea have been passed down in the form of legends and miracles until they are scientifically explained.

The Dead Sea and the Sirens of Egypt

The Dead Sea has always been regarded as a place of rich mineral resources. The legendary Egyptian queen, Cleopatra, is said to have used the Dead Sea's mineral wealth to maintain her beauty. Cleopatra is believed to have been the first to recognise the beauty benefits of Dead Sea mud and salt. Dead Sea minerals, such as magnesium and potassium, nourish the skin and improve its elasticity and firmness. As a result, using Dead Sea skincare products can help improve the overall health of the skin, making it look younger and more vibrant.

Cleopatra had her own beauty factory that used Dead Sea mud and mineral salts as natural care products.

Dead Sea and Science

The Dead Sea is not only a historical and cultural gem, but also a treasure trove of scientific research. Due to its unique geographical location and chemical composition, it provides a unique laboratory where scientists can study the Earth's past, as well as its possible future. The water of the Dead Sea is rich in minerals such as magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium, which are difficult to find in nature, making the Dead Sea an ideal place to study the effects of these elements on living organisms. In addition, the high salinity of the Dead Sea makes the microbiological communities in the area unique, providing biologists with the opportunity to study organisms that can survive in extreme environments. These studies help us understand how life survives and adapts in such extreme environments, and provide important clues in the search for extraterrestrial life.

↑ Scientists believe that by studying the Dead Sea, they can learn about the adaptability of organisms in extreme environments and thus explore the origins of species.
